DivX to compete with Apple

divx-media-streaming-device_69.jpg

DivX has presented the prototype of their media streaming device, something that we can compare with the Apple TV. The company has claimed that their prototype is a low-cost, efficient, network media player that runs at 720p resolution.

The device needs to be networked to a computer and software needs to be installed on that PC so that the connection can be made. The company has also done well in designing a bright and an easy-to-use interface. The UI rendering is actually done on the networked computer and is then sent to the player in small files. This is the reason why the company is expecting to sell the device under $99 just after completing a year of production.

DivX has also made use of an API that should allow customers to create their own plug-ins and applications to handle multimedia content. DivXs player will surely be an Apple TV competitor. Apple TV is basically an entry-level computer without an OS. It comes with a CPU, HDD, and a GPU, taking the price tag of Apple TV to $299. DivX has shown the Cupertino giant that the same functionality can come in a cheaper price since DivXs player makes use of the networked computer to do all that.
