Samsung G800

The G800 is soon to be added to Samsungs portfolio and it represents a significant step forward for the camera phone. The G800 has a camera with an optical zoom, which is an extremely rare feature on a phone.

Phones generally come with digital zooms, which crop areas of the original image and enlarge them at the expense of the picture quality. Images through digital zooms are usually blocky and pretty poor quality.

Most digital cameras come with optical zooms which use the optics or lens of the camera to bring the subject closer.
Take a look at this article for a clearer explanation of the difference between optical and digital zooms.

The important thing is the G800 has it and others do not! Not even the Sony Ericsson Cybershot range including the fabulous K850i can boast an optical zoom so Samsung have really pulled one of the hat here. The Nokia N93 (see below) did have an optical zoom but only by way of a unsightly bulge at the top of the phone and consequently at the expense of the look and feel of the handset. The G800 by comparison is a pretty swanky looking slider phone, not the slimmest at 18.8mm but comfortably thinner than rivals such as the Nokia N95, and it also finds space for an impressive 2.4? screen.

The camera is 5 megapixel resolution like the G600, but as well as the zoom the G800 features an Xenon flash, an improvement on the LED Flash on the G600.

It is also HSDPA (3.5G) for super-fast downloads.

No official release date has been announced, but suffice to say were looking forward to it!
